It's Been a Bad Week

Just wanted to do a short post explaining why I have been MIA lately.  My father-in law passed away last Thursday in the early morning.  He was an amazing man who I loved dearly and I always knew that his loss would be a hard one.  He lived to 86.5 years and had not had much quality of life for quite some time. We feel calm that he is finally at peace now.

Then, on Thursday evening my mother suffered a massive stroke.  She was brought to the hospital in a short enough time to allow them to administer a drug to help break up the clot.  There has been some good improvement and we are hopeful that she will walk again and be able to go home at some point.  She will go to a rehabilitation facility for a number of weeks.

Thank goodness that Susan now lives in Alberta.  I don't know how Robert and I would have been able to manage these events happening in such a short period of time.

My body decided that I need a rest and I started getting sick yesterday.  Just a bug with a fever.  I'll be ready for action again within a couple of days.

I have been peeking into some of your blogs here and there but don't have much energy to leave you all a comment.

I'm on the Case

I have been busy solving another case at CSI.  These challenges have me going through my stash and totally mixing up the lines.  I'm loving how the journaling prompts are encouraging me to experiment journaling in another way.  I made the "Most Wanted" list again last week!

It is always nice to have a little visit from the "Scrapping Self- Esteem Fairy".  hee hee

So here is this week's case.

My LO featuring two old sisters knitting (and talking too, I think.)

Evidence: distressing, woodgrain paper, clusters of similar items, combination of straight and organic lines.

Testimony: 5 Senses  It was fun to explore the senses as I knit!

I used this sketch by Kristine Davidson.  Creative Scrappers #195

Hope you all have something crafty planned for today.  I'm having a date with my laundry and ironing board as well as a visit from a furniture repair person.  Boo to domestic duties.  :(

Are You Up for a Challenge?

March is just around the corner and so next month's Photo a Day Challenge has just been released!

I am just loving these daily photo prompts.  It has me taking out my camera again and taking photos that I might not have thought of on my own.  In February, I shared my photos on my blog as well as storing hard copies in a photo album that I have designated for these challenges.  Next month I will continue to fill my album with these daily photos.  I love the flexibility of this project.  So easy to opt out of a month if it becomes a chore at any time.

Hope you'll consider playing along this month.  It is always so refreshing to have a new stash of recent photos that NEED to be scrapped.  ;)

Nothing Scrappy

There is nothing scrappy going on around here but I am making terrific headway on my granny square afghan.  Making these little squares that will eventually make up a full blanket is quite addictive.

Diane expressed an interest in learning how to make these as she loves the vintage look of them.  So a Mama's dream came true as we sat together and I showed her how.  What, one of my daughters doing something crafty?  She is making herself a blanket now.

I was not supposed to put this photo on my blog as Diane thinks it makes her seem "pathetic" to be spending a Saturday night at your parent's house learning how to crochet.  ;)  In her defense, her boyfriend works up North two weeks out of every three so, sometimes these "pathetic" weekends do happen.

Check this out if you want to see my new crocheting hero, Johnny V, in action!  This video will easily teach you how to make these, if you are interested.  There is also a written out pattern to go with it.

Here are the latest photos for my photo challenge.

About This Guy in the Cowboy Hat...

So, I confess.  I'm a huge Dwight Yoakam fan.  It's really weird because I really don't care for country music that much.  So why is the one artist that I love, the one with the super twanggy country vibe?  There is just something about that voice that I love!

I was fortunate enough to get to see him perform in 2006 at a small venue in Edmonton.  I told Rob that I could die now because I had seen Dwight.  hee hee  Anyway, wouldn't you know he came back to my neck of the woods earlier this month.  He played at a casino on an Indian reserve just outside of Edmonton.  The casino is a smokey haze that takes me back to life in the 70's but it was worth it to see Dwight.  There is no smoking in the actual concert area which is this huge heated tent.  I guess you know that you are past the prime of your career when you perform in a tent, in Canada, in February.  But, there is something awesome about seeing a musical performance at a small venue.

Rob landed us front row and center tickets with a meet and greet photo opp!  Score!!  Let me tell you it was a very brief meeting, as in,  stand next to him, tell him what your name is, get your photo taken and move on.  But.... it was soooo worth it!  I think I'll be scrapping this eventually.  :)

The concert was terrific and it will probably be the last time that we ever score such great seating.  I did try to convince Susan to give Dwight a listen but she only lasted though 56 seconds of "Guitars and Cadillacs."  What???  Who would pick that popular group Coldplay over Dwight???  hee hee

So I have to ask.... are there any other Dwight fans out there?  Please tell me I'm not alone?  ;)

CSI Colour Challenge #6

I have just solved the case for the newest challenge up at CSI. Just loved this warm palette perfectly suited for nature themed photos.

Evidence:  My wood accents are the wooden buttons and wood grained paper,  I used two orange papers that had different patterns and I used metal buttons.

Testimony:  I illuminated my subject by telling the story of this male goose.

I used this sketch from PageMaps.

Here are my latest photos for the photo challenge.

February 12 ~ in my closet  (I edited it in a blue tone because I am thinking of doing a LO to document my love of blue jeans.)

It Just Seemed Off

Sometimes it happens.  I do a LO and I am relatively happy with it until.... I see it on my blog.  Then it hits me that it's not quite right.   I think I knew it all along with this one as after I completed it, I had a feeling of wanting to do something minimal next time.  This is usually my clue that I have put too much on my last one.

Through the years I have heard Rob say over and over, "Less is more." and "Overkill".  ;)  Yes, sometimes the creative juices get out of control.  I so admire the Marcy Penners and Rahel Menigs of our scrappy world.  I study everything they do and yet know that I could never achieve it.  The addiction to pattern stops me every time.

So here is my updated version of "With You".  Thank goodness for re-positional adhesives!

Today's prompt for the photo challenge was so easy it was a hard decision.

February 11 ~ makes you happy

First I took a photo of Lady.  I love all my pups but Lady seems to hold a special place in my heart.  She is the example of what it is to be happy every day.  I now that all dogs live in the now but this little one loves life.  She is so happy that she wiggles with excitement and that tail never stops wagging.

Next, I took a photo of my sweetie.  He really does make me happy every day.  He also makes me laugh every day.  (Sorry Rob, but I'm saving this photo for my annual Valentine's LO of you.)

The girlies were not around so I had no opportunity to even attempt a photo of these unwilling subjects.  ;)

In the end, I settled on this photo.  It makes me chuckle.  Maggie is moving, Gus is just Gus and Lady is blinking.  My motley crew in a reality shot,  my favourite kind of photo.

Sweet Girly

There's been lots more scrapping going on over here.  I got two more LO's done of this little sweetie.

I am still having fun using up some older BG and mixing up the paper lines.  Both of these LO's are based on more sketches from the Creative Scrapper's eBook.  I am loving having so many of Kristine's sketches to use.  I love her sketches and they work so well for my scrappy style.

I am still being faithful to my photo challenge.   I am seriously considering taking on Project Life next year.  I love having all of these everyday photos and I really enjoy the challenge of a prompt.  I am storing them in an ordinary photo album.  I have stamped the date and recorded the prompt for each photo.

Here are the latest!

February 9 ~ doorway

February 10 ~ self portrait ( I always find these very challenging to take.  I can't smile naturally for myself!  ;) )

Oh Baby

I have another LO to share today using another sketch from the Creative Scrappers eBook.  These sketches really have me scrapping.  I'm trying to get some LO's done for my friend's baby album for her little girl.  I have been searching the stash for as much pink as I can possibly find.

I used some more BG from older lines here.  Hey, notice that amazing chevron paper from the Porcelain collection.  From back before we knew that we loved chevron patterns!  hee hee  It was fun to find it and make old new and hip again.

And... the latest photo for the challenge.

February 8 ~ sun

Lucky for me it was a sunny day yesterday.  However so many things come to mind when I think of sun.  Anything that makes me feel warm and happy in fact.  I suppose that even photos of the pack would have worked.  ;)

Well, I'm off to the studio.  I have photos of cute baby faces and tiny toes waiting to be scrapped!

A New Frontier and a LO

Check out my giveaway for a chance to win this!

Today was the day that I entered into the world of crocheting and what a day it was.  Luckily I had my trusty big sister by my side to help me along the way.  Susan has made beautiful granny square afghans.  A granny square is the only thing I really want to learn to crochet.  I dream of making afghans.

To prepare for today, I started reading my crochet book, learning how to make a chain and do a single crochet.  I also found some internet instructions on making granny squares.  Susan hasn't made one in about 20 years and wanted to refresh.  I had warned Susan that I didn't anticipate being a quick study.  Crocheting just seems awkward, I mean, where's the other needle?  ;)  I'm a knitter at heart!  Well, I started off shaky but through the day my crocheting movements became somewhat more smooth.  After a few mistakes along the way, some slack tension and lots and lots of questions, I think I am finally getting it!  Yay!!  I still have some practicing to do before my squares will be good enough for my afghan.  Susan was a very patient teacher.  She had lots of down time while waiting for me to catch up!  hee hee  Thank you Susan for all of your help.  :)

In scrappy news,  I am in a BG kind of mood and got into some of my old stash.  So in the spirit of Valentine's Day, I created this LO of my friend's little girl.

I love paper hearts and wanted it to have a real homemade Valentine feel so I used staples and small circular elements made with a simple hole punch.  Reminds me of elementary art class.

I used a sketch out of the Creative Scrappers "Creating with Sketches" eBook.

Lastly, here are my last photos for the February Photo Challenge!

February 5 ~ 10 am

February 6 ~ dinner  (makes me glad I'm not a canine)

February 7 ~ button  (there is never just one button for scrappers!)

I am finally able to share some happy news that I have been sitting on for awhile now.  I have been published in Kristine Davidson's eBook!!

I got my PDF copy last night and was pretty excited to look through it all and see all of the amazing reveals.  I LOVE Kristine's sketches and am so excited to have so many to use.  I honestly want to do them all.

Here is my LO starring my sweet nephew, Thomas!  A big shout out to Auntie Carolyn who took this amazing photo.

Kristine has given me a PDF copy to give away to one of my readers!!  Yay!!!   I am so excited!!  So, if you would like to be in the running just leave me a comment.  I'll pick a random winner on Wednesday, after dinner.

Good luck.  I know you will love it!!

CSI Colour Challenges #4 & #5

I am really loving these colour challenges at CSI.  I look forward to the palette revealed each Friday evening.  I think it is terrific that Debbi gives us 9 days to get the challenge done.  Having two weekends to work on a challenge is great.  I imagine it is much needed for busy moms and scrappers who work outside the home.

Here is the challenge #4.

My take!

Evidence:  frames, stripes, rhinestones and the glazed brads count as my shiny object.

Testimony:  My journaling is a reflection and I also journaled in a frame.

I used this sketch designed by Natalie Roy.

Next Up is challenge #5.

For me this palette cried out for Jillibean Soup.  I was happy to go through many lines and mix and match papers that worked.

Evidence:  frame, use of starburst punch, and my border made from small elements.

Testimony:  I journaled in "bits & pieces" telling things about the heritage park that are not evident in the photograph.

I used this sketch designed by Ashley Horton.
